Today, on March 5th, we celebrate the birth anniversary of a man who was a true visionary and leader – Biju Patnaik. Born in 1916 in Odisha, Biju Patnaik was a man of many talents – an aviator, an entrepreneur, a freedom fighter, and a politician. He played a pivotal role in the development of Odisha and was a staunch believer in the potential of the state.

Biju Patnaik’s life was nothing short of inspiring. He joined the Indian National Congress in 1937 and was imprisoned for his participation in the Quit India Movement. After his release, he went to the United States to study aviation and returned to India in 1946 to start his own aviation company, Kalinga Airlines. He used his planes to ferry food and supplies to remote areas of Odisha during times of natural disasters, earning him the nickname “The Flying Sikh.”

In 1961, Biju Patnaik was elected as the Chief Minister of Odisha, a position he held twice. During his tenure, he focused on improving infrastructure, education, and healthcare in the state. He also worked towards the upliftment of tribals and marginalized communities.

Apart from his political career, Biju Patnaik was also a philanthropist and a patron of the arts. He established the Kalinga Foundation Trust, which promotes cultural, educational, and scientific activities in Odisha.

Biju Patnaik’s legacy lives on even today, and his contributions to Odisha and India are immeasurable. His commitment to public service and his tireless efforts to improve the lives of people serve as an inspiration to us all.
