Odisha Joins Ayushman Bharat Mission with Gopabandhu Jan Arogya Yojana Integration
In a landmark move on April 11, 2025, the state of Odisha officially joined the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) by merging it with its own Gopabandhu Jan Arogya Yojana (GJAY). The unified scheme, now known as Ayushman Bharat-Gopabandhu Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-GJAY), was launched at a grand event in Cuttack.
The inauguration was led by Union Health Minister JP Nadda and Odisha’s new Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, signaling a major shift in the state’s approach to healthcare access and welfare.
What is AB-GJAY?
AB-GJAY combines the strengths of the national Ayushman Bharat program with the state-run GJAY, aiming to provide seamless, cashless, and high-quality treatment to over 3.52 crore people from 1.08 crore families in Odisha.
Key Benefits:
- 💰 Health insurance coverage up to ₹5 lakh per family per year
- 👩 Additional ₹5 lakh for women members in each family
- 🏥 Access to 29,000+ empanelled hospitals across India
- 📲 Fully cashless and paperless transactions
- 🧾 Smart Health Cards for easy verification and claim process
Why This Matters
Odisha had earlier chosen not to implement Ayushman Bharat directly and instead operated GJAY. With this integration, the state now joins the national framework while still offering enhanced and state-specific benefits.
This step ensures that Odisha residents can access national-level hospital networks, significantly improving treatment options for critical illnesses, surgeries, and chronic care—especially for the poor, rural, and tribal populations.

The launch event in Cuttack was attended by:
- 🗣 JP Nadda, Union Health Minister, who called this “a historic day for Odisha”
- 🏛 CM Mohan Charan Majhi, emphasizing inclusive governance and welfare
- 🧑⚕️ Healthcare professionals, beneficiaries, and dignitaries from both state and center

Looking Ahead: A Healthier Odisha
With AB-GJAY now live, Odisha is expected to see a boost in hospital visits, better health outcomes, and lower out-of-pocket expenses. The integrated health card and digital platform ensure transparency, portability, and ease of access across India.
